What Is Square One Lite?
Square One Lite is a utility that puts all your programs and files in a single, handy icon palette. You can bring your palette to the front by dragging your mouse to the lower right corner. You can open anything in your palette by double-clicking on it. With Square One Lite, you can:
• Launch programs and open documents.
• Keep your desktop clean.
• Find and open a particular file on your disk-drive.
• Switch between running programs.
• Quit any running program with a click.

What You Need to Begin
• A Macintosh (or compatible) computer running MacOS 7.0 or higher.
• A hard disk-drive.
• 4 or more megabytes of RAM.
• MacOS 7.5 or later is needed to drag a file from your disk-drive to a Square One Lite palette.

Because of SimpleText’s file size limitations, this User Guide is broken into three parts:
Part 1-Square One Quick Start Includes:
“Chapter 1: Welcome to Square One Lite” describes Square One Lite, this user guide, how to register your software, and how to get help.

Conventions Used
• Bold text refers to buttons, menus, checkboxes and menu items.
• “Quoted text” refers to “folder names”, “window names”, “dialog names”, “disk-drive names”, and “file names”. It's also used for “chapter or section references”.
• Hierarchical submenus are noted as Submenu: Submenu Item. For example, the Current Palette item of the Preferences submenu would be described as: Select Preferences: Current Palette from the Edit menu."
• Command followed by a letter means hold down the Command key while pressing the letter. For example, Command-V means hold down the Command key while pressing the V key. The Command key has a cloverleaf symbol on it.
• Shift-click means hold down the Shift key while clicking the mouse button, Option-click means hold down the Option key while clicking the mouse button. The same is true for Control-click and Command-click.
• Important warnings and notes look like this:

• Features which involve dragging from your disk-drive to a palette require MacOS 7.5 or later. Sections describing these features have the text “• 7.5 or later required” immediately following their heading.

How Do I Install Square One Lite?
See the installation instructions in the file named “Read Me First-Square One Lite.”
What Files Does Square One Lite Use?
• “Square One Lite 3.0” is the heart and brains of Square One Lite. It is the application itself. The Installer places it in a folder named “Square One Folder” on your disk-drive. When this guide uses the phrase “Square One Lite,” it refers to the application.
• “Read Me First-Square One Lite ” is a text file that contains the latest information about Square One Lite. It is also placed in the “Square One Folder”.
• “Square One Lite 3.0 alias” launches Square One every time you start your Macintosh. The first time you launch Square One Lite you may be asked if you want Square One Lite to launch at startup. If you click Yes, Square One Lite will create an alias of itself and put it inside the “Startup Items” folder. We recommend that you launch Square One Lite at startup and leave it running all the time.
• “Square One Lite Preferences” keeps track of Square One Lite's preference settings. It is created by Square One Lite and stored in the “Preferences” folder in your “System Folder”.
• “Square One Palette” is a blank palette to help get you started. It is placed in the “Square One Folder.”
• “Square One Lite Guide” and “About Square One Lite Guide” collectively comprise Square One Lite’s Apple Guide. They are used to provide online help to users of MacOS 7.5 or later. They are placed in the “Square One Folder.”
• “Square One Lite 3.0 User Guide” is stored in the “Square One Folder.” It contains this file and the two other files which comprise the complete user documentation of Square One Lite.
3: Getting Started
This chapter explains how to begin using Square One Lite right away. By the end of this chapter you will know how to:
• Get help on screen.
• Create a palette.
• Add files and applications to a palette.
• Add documents to a palette.
• Remove items from a palette.
• Use Square One Lite to launch applications and open documents.
How Do I Get Help On Screen?
• Almost all the information in this User Guide is also contained in the Square One Lite Guide. You can easily search the Square One Lite Guide to find answers to your questions. Select Square One Lite Guide (Command-?) from the Guide menu to open it.
NOTE: You need AppleGuide, which is part of the MacOS 7.5 or later, to use Square One Lite’s online help.
Creating a Palette
A Square One Lite palette is a document created by Square One Lite and saved on your disk-drive.
Applications, folders and documents look exactly the same on a Square One Lite palette as they do on your disk-drive.
The palette gives you instant access to all the files you use regularly in a single window. Once files are added to your palette, just double-click to launch them.
How Do I Launch Square One Lite?
• Double-click on the “Square One Lite 3.0” icon (in the “Square One Lite” on your disk-drive).
How Do I Create a New Palette?
1. Choose New (Command-N) from the File menu.
2. Choose the folder in which you want to save your palette, type in a name for your new palette (“Square One Palette” is filled in by default), and then click Save.
Adding Files
You can add any files you want to your palette. If it's a file and it exists on your disk-drive, you can add it to your palette.
Here are some suggestions of what to put in your palette:
• All your programs and applications (to launch them more easily).
• Your favorite folders (to copy or move files into them).
• Your disk-drive (to quickly open any file).
• The System Folder (because you're always messing with your System Folder).
• The Trash (to delete files with).
There are four ways to add files to your palette. Some are a little easier than others. This section details them all. We suggest that you use the way that works best for you.
NOTE: The “Find Files” dialog (detailed in the next section) appears automatically after you launch Square One Lite for the first time. This is to help you get started right away.
How Do I Add Files Using the Find Files Command?
1. Select Find Files (Command-F) from the Setup menu.
2. If you have more than one disk-drive, you'll see a dialog that allows you to choose the disk to search. Click on the disk you want Square One to search.
3. Square One will search your disk and display the “Find Files” dialog with a list of all the applications on your disk-drive.
4. Select applications you want to add to your palette by clicking to the left of the their names. A checkmark will appear indicating that they have been selected.
5. When you are finished selecting files click OK.
- The Show pop-up menu lets you search for Applications, Desk Accessories, Control Panels. To find different kinds of files, select the kind you want from the Show menu. To add different kinds of files you need to do more than one Find. For example, first find applications, select the ones you want and click OK. After that, find desk accessories, select the ones you want and click OK. Repeat until all the files you want have been added to your palette.
NOTE: If you change the Show menu before clicking OK, selections you made are not saved. For example, if you select applications that you want to add to your palette and then change the Show menu to Desk Accessories, the applications you just selected are forgotten and will not be added.
How Do I Add Files Using a Dialog?
1. Double-click on an empty cell in your palette or choose Add Files to Palette (Command-A) from the Setup menu.
2. Select a file you want to add and click Add. You can add a folder by selecting it and clicking Add Folder. Files and folders you've added appear on the right.
- To see only applications, click Show Applications Only.
- To remove files from the right window and not add them, click Remove.
3. When you're done selecting files click OK.
How Do I Add Files Using Drag and Drop?
• 7.5 or later required
• Drag the files over your palette so that the whole palette becomes highlighted. Release the mouse button. The files will be added to your palette.
How Do I Add Files Using Drag and Drop with the Square One Lite Application Icon?
If you're not running MacOS 7.5 or later, you can still drag files to the Square One application icon on your disk-drive to add them.
1. Drag the files over the Square One Lite application icon so that it highlights. Release the mouse.
2. The “Process Dragged File” dialog will appear. If you have more than one palette open, select one from the Open Palettes pop-up menu. Click Palette to add the files to your palette.
Adding Documents
Document lists are the way Square One Lite organizes documents. Each application has a document list that appears when you click and hold. Documents appear in an item’s document list only when you add them and disappear only when you remove them.
There are four ways to add documents to your palette. Some are a little easier than others. This section details them all. We suggest that you use the way that works best for you.
How Do I Add Documents Using the Find Documents Command?
1. Select the palette item to which you want to add documents.
2. Choose Find Documents (Command-S) from the Setup menu.
3. If you have more than one disk-drive, you'll see a dialog that allows you to choose the disk to search. Click on the disk you want Square One to search.
4. Square One will search your disk and display the “Find Documents” dialog with a list of all the documents which were created by the selected palette item.
5. Select documents you want to add to your palette by clicking to the left of the their name. A checkmark will appear indicating that they have been selected.
6. When you are finished selecting documents click OK.
How Do I Add Documents Using Drag and Drop?
• 7.5 or later required
• Command-drag the documents over the palette item to which you want to add them. Release the mouse button. The documents will be added to the item.
NOTE: Just dragging documents over a palette item (as opposed to Command-dragging them) will open them, but will not add them. Control-dragging documents to a palette item will open them and add them.
How Do I Add Documents Using a Dialog?
1. Select the palette item to which you want to add documents.
2. Choose Add Documents (Command-H) from the Setup menu.
3. Select a document you want to add and click Add. To remove documents from the bottom list and not add them, select them and click Remove.
4. When you're done selecting documents click OK.
How Do I Add Documents Using Drag and Drop with the Square One Lite Application Icon?
1. Drag the documents over the Square One Lite application icon so that it highlights. Release the mouse.
2. The “Process Dragged File” dialog will appear with a list of palette items which can open the dragged documents. If you have more than one palette open, select one from the Open Palettes pop-up menu. Select the item to which you want to add the documents and click Install.
Adding Folders
Once you add a folder to your palette, you can:
• Double-click on it to open it.
• Click and hold to open a file within it.
• Move or copy a file to it (requires MacOS 7.5 or later).
Since the Trash is a folder, you can add it to your palette. Dragging files to the Trash in your palette moves them to the Trash.
How Do I Add Folders to My Palette Using a Dialog?
1. Double-click on an empty cell in your palette or choose Add Files to Palette (Command-A) from the Setup menu.
2. Select a folder you want to add and then click Add Folder. Folders you've added appear on the right.
3. When you're done selecting folders click OK.
How Do I Add Folders Using Drag and Drop?
• 7.5 or later required
• Drag the folders over your palette so that the whole palette becomes highlighted. Release the mouse button. The folders will be added to your palette.
How Do I Add the Trash to My Palette?
• 7.5 or later required
• To add the Trash, drag it over your palette so that the whole palette becomes highlighted. Release the mouse button. The Trash will be added to your palette.
Removing Items
This section tells you how to remove items and documents from your palette. Don't be afraid to remove something from your palette. You can't get into any trouble because removing an item from your palette will not delete it from your disk-drive.
How Do I Remove Palette Items?
1. Choose Remove Palette Items from the Setup menu.
2. Select the items you want to remove. To select more than one consecutive item, click-drag or Shift-click. To select or deselect a single item, Command-click.
3. Click OK when the items you want to remove are highlighted.
4. To remove all the selected items click Yes.
How Do I Remove Just One Palette Item?
1. Select the item you want to remove.
2. Press the Delete key or choose Remove [item name] (Command-B) from the Edit menu.
3. To remove the item click Yes .
How Do I Remove Documents?
1. Select the palette item which contains documents you want to remove.
2. Choose Remove Documents from the Setup menu.
3. Select the documents you want to remove. To select more than one consecutive document, click-drag or Shift-click. To select or deselect a single document, Command-click.
4. Click OK when the documents you want to remove are highlighted.
5. To remove all the selected documents click Yes.
NOTE: To delete a document when the document list is showing, select a document and select Remove Document (Command-K) from the Edit menu.
Using Your New Palette
• To bring your palette to the front, drag your mouse to the lower right corner of your main monitor.
• To launch any application in your palette, double-click on it.
• To open a document in your palette, click and hold on an application and select the document from the pop-up menu which appears.
• To open a document on your disk-drive with an application in your palette, drag the document over the application and let go when the application highlights (requires MacOS 7.5 or later).
• To move a file to a folder in your palette, drag it over the folder and release the mouse (requires MacOS 7.5 or later).
• To copy a file to a folder in your palette, Option-drag it over the folder and release the mouse (requires MacOS 7.5 or later).
• To move a file to the Trash, add the Trash to your palette and drag a file to it (requires MacOS 7.5 or later).
